Tanzania PB Ngorongoro Ridge

Our Ngorongoro Ridge comes from three farms on the slopes the Ngorongoro Crater — an area of global importance for its rich biodiversity.

The farms were established by German settlers in the 1920s. Today, the old residences and family cemetery have been respectfully preserved and the farms are run by Tropical Farm Management, a Neumann Kaffee Gruppe company.

The farms also include maize and wheat crops, but large portions of them are not cultivated, to allow the local floral and fauna to flourish. Water from a stream that flows through the property, down from the moutains, is used for processing the coffee and is also a water source for elephants, cape buffalo, warthogs and antelope.

The coffee is grown under shade trees, which allows the soil to retain its moisture and reduces the need for irrigation. Cherry is pulped with water from the stream, undergoes a dry fermentation process and then is washed and graded in channels filled with water. Finally, it’s dried in the sun on raised African beds.

Tropical Farm Management farms are guided by a sustainable farming philosophy that integrates good production practices with environmental preservation, social sensitivity and a goal of long-term viability. The philosophy is shared with the community and borne out in the results of the farm.

Cupping notes: Creamy, buttery body, bright, smooth, sweet. Notes of florals and brown sugar and citrus.
