In early 2014, our export sister company Stocker and the coffee nonprofit HRNS do Brasil began considering how they might together assist Brazil’s smallholder producers in not only improving their agronomy practices and cup quality but also profitability. The result was the Forca Café Championship — a contest to celebrate the best coffees from Minas Gerais’ smallholder producers, paired with an online auction through which buyers could compete for the lots.
This year's 8th annual Brazil Força Cafe competition was executed remotely for the second time. Explicitly, calibration and cupping was done internationally by several exporter and roaster judges, who in the past would have congregated in Brazil to complete the task. Thanks to our talented cuppers, technological resources and the communication and organizational efforts of all involved, it was another success.
NKG export company Stockler purchased all 42 coffees that were accepted into the competition at well above market price. The top 12 coffees in the two categories (natural process and pulped natural) made it to auction on Nov. 4, and InterAmerican won the top three lots! Every dollar spent during the auction, above the initial purchase price, goes directly back to the producers.
Additionally, to benefit and raise up the coffee community of San Antônio do Amparo, the contest was linked to Casa da Criança, a community center that offers crucial youth services and adult classes. On every bag won at auction, InterAmerican also elected to pay a per-pound premium toward Casa da Crianca, which this year led to a donation of $1,203. (You can read more about the center here.)
