Cooperative San Juan Del Oro was created in 1961 with just 40 farmers and has since grown to include 987 active small coffee growers in the Sandia, Puno region of Peru. The farmers are mainly of Quechua and Aimara indigenous decent. San Juan Del Oro became Fair Trade certified in 1997, and works with their producers to improve quality, paying higher premiums for higher yields. This cooperative also supports women's initiatives related to income diversification and processing activities, such as marmalade and honey production. Water management has become a priority for the cooperative as well as organic and sustainable production, and climate change programs.
